Sulfate-Reducing Bioreactors

IWT scientists developed the first Alcohol Enhanced Sulfate-reducing Bioreactors. These bioreactors provide a lower cost, more passive alternative to lime precipitation of acid mine drainage where appropriate. Our bioreactor technology reduces the plugging, short circuiting and waste management problems that are associated with other bioreactor technologies. Potassium Permanganate Passivation

Potassium Permanganate Passivation technology, developed by DuPont and UNR, prevents the generation of acid on disturbed sulfide-containing rock. When applied to pit walls in early applications, the patented formula creates a chemically bonded protective barrier preventing oxidation of the reduced sulfide containing ores.
