Permanganate Passivation
Permanganate Passivation - Preventing Acid Generation
Often when mineral surfaces are exposed during mining operations, acid generation begins. The resulting acid mine drainage presents a serious, costly environmental problem for the operator.
The Permanganate Passivation technology is applied at the source of acid generation to prevent the contact of sulfide mineral with air. The potassium permanganate solution creates an inert chemical layer that isolates the sulfide rock by oxidating the permanganate to a Mn(IV) oxide.

The Expected Advantages of Permanganate Passivation
- Greater stabilization of exposed pit walls
- Prevention of acid generation at the source
- Reduction of dangerous sulfur dioxide gas in underground environments
- Less or lower concentration levels of contaminated waste rock
- More working time for exposed sulfide rock
IWT is the exclusive provider of this patented technology, developed by Dupont Chemical and owned by the University of Nevada, Reno. IWT team members have dedicated extensive efforts to the continued analysis of its effectiveness in the treatment and management of acid production in mining.
